WHAT IS THE VERY FIRST ANIME YOU WATCHED?
Alright Ramen Lovers! We are kicking off this 30 day anime challenge with a rather difficult question to answer. Like, are we talking about the first anime I’ve ever seen EVER? Or are we talking about the first anime I saw when I came to the realization that it was anime and not just badass, stylish cartoons? Welp, guess I’ll just do both!
So, let’s take it back to the year 2000. I didn’t have cable at the time, so all I had was Saturday morning cartoons (which I had to watch just before going to church), and I watched them primarily on Kids WB. Though I can’t really remember what shows were on during that time, I do fondly remember enjoying Cardcaptors every weekend.
If you’ve never seen like this show, it is about a ten year old girl named Sakura Kinomoto who accidentally releases a set of magical cards, called Clow Cards. Each card has it’s own ability and can assume an alternate form when activated. Because it is her fault they got out, Sakura decides to retrieve the cards that have escaped. She makes a ton of friends along the way (most notably a character named Cerberus who reminds me of Kon from Bleach).
Basically, this show is kind of like a Mahou Shoujo version of Yu-Gi-Oh (or, rather, Yu-Gi-Oh is the Shounen version of Cardcaptors since the latter came out before the former).
Unfortunately, I never finished this show. I think it either stopped airing new episodes or I outgrew it, but I don’t think I ever saw the ending to this show.
Maybe I’ll return to it someday as it’s currently streaming on crunchyroll.
Far away from the pure and innocent show I watched before I knew I was watching anime, when I was fourteen I watched Kanokon at the recommendation of a guy who would become one of my best friends to this day. The year was 2008 and I was fueled by instant ramen, existential crises, and hormones. So, naturally, I discovered the Ecchi/Harem genre and gravitated towards it like a moth to a flame.
The story centers around a boy named Kouta Oyamada, a first-year in high school. On his first day of school, he meets Chizuru Minamoto who tells him that she is in love with him and reveals to him that she is actually a fox spirit. Horny teenage shenanigans ensue, much to Kouta’s embarrassment and Chizuru’s joy.
I am proud to say that this show alone is responsible for my love of the Ecchi/Harem genre and led me spiraling deep in to the somewhat depraved yet wholesome world of anime and manga of this genre. Fortunately, this show is also streaming on le crunchyroll for you all to watch and enjoy!
And that is it for day one weebs and weebettes! I really hope that you guys enjoy this content and that you guys get to know more about me through it. See ya tomorrow for day 2!
